Food Under the Tatras: Local Dishes to Try

A holiday under the Tatras is not only about mountains, hikes and views. It is also a unique journey through flavours passed down from generation to generation. Sheepfolds, mountain huts and village restaurants offer honest cuisine full of sheep cheese, potatoes, forest mushrooms and herbs. Join us to taste the very best the region has to offer.

The undisputed king of Tatra cuisine is bryndzové halušky. Soft potato dough, strong sheep's bryndza cheese and fried bacon create a combination you must try at least once. The most authentic version is found directly at the sheepfolds lining the roads of Liptov and beneath the High Tatras. Tip: visit a sheepfold at lunchtime between 12 and 2 p.m., when the food is freshly cooked and the place is lively.

Halušky go hand in hand with žinčica – a slightly sour sheep's whey drink that is a by-product of cheese making. Served chilled, it is ideal after a demanding hike. Together with fresh or smoked oštiepok cheese, it makes a perfect snack. Many sheepfolds also let you watch the cheese being made live, which delights families with children in particular.

Don't miss out on Demänová cheese and the Liptov cheese products that win awards even abroad. In the Low Tatras, around the Demänovská Valley, you'll find small cheese dairies selling directly from the producer. Korbáčik, parenica and chewy smoked cheese are excellent and easy to take home as a tasty souvenir.

For hot dishes, try the cabbage soup (kapustnica), potato pancakes (haruľa), wild mushroom soup or roasted pork knuckle. Mountain huts often serve game too – venison or wild boar specialties with cranberry sauce. To finish, treat yourself to doughnuts, trdelník or homemade buns, accompanied by borovička gin or herbal tea made from Tatra plants.

A practical transport tip: most sheepfolds and dairies lie outside town centres, so it pays to have a car or plan a trip with a local taxi. Many venues in Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica or the Demänovská Valley are, however, reachable on foot or by the Tatra tram. Book a table in advance, especially during the main season and at weekends.

After a day full of flavours, there is no better rest than the comfort of your own villa or apartment. At TatraVillas you can choose accommodation with a fully equipped kitchen, where you can prepare regional treats at home too. Book directly, commission-free – check available dates and treat yourself to a culinary holiday under the Tatras.
