Family outings from Zvolen: a forest railway, a ruin above the town and thermal baths within reach

From Zvolen you can reach the wooden UNESCO church in Hronsek in 15 minutes by car (13 km) and the thermal swimming complex in Kováčová 5 km away, where the water reaches up to 38 °C. In between, a forest railway with a 760 mm gauge and the Pustý hrad ruins covering more than 4 hectares await you. The Zlatý Potok apartments, meanwhile, are in-town lodging for two, a peaceful place to return to in the evening from your family outings.

The biggest draw for children is the Čiernohronská railway in Čierny Balog. It's a historic narrow-gauge forest railway (760 mm gauge) founded in 1909; it once had a 132 km network and was the longest forest railway in Slovakia. Today you can ride the restored section through the valley, and the same journey also takes you to the Vydrovo Forestry Open-Air Museum, a museum of forestry set right in nature. So you can easily combine the museum and the little train into a single outing. The route from Zvolen runs via Banská Bystrica and Brezno, so allow for a full day, and check the exact timetable before setting off, as it changes seasonally.

You don't always have to get in the car, though. Rising directly above the town is Pustý hrad, sprawling ruins on a hilltop (571 m above sea level) which, covering more than 4 hectares, rank among the largest castle sites in Central Europe. It's a freely accessible site (no ticket office) that you reach along a waymarked nature trail in roughly an hour, setting off, for example, from the railway station or the ice rink. The path is manageable for families too, and since 2022 a new viewing platform at the top rewards you with a panorama over the Zvolen basin. The ideal half-day walk when you want some activity without a long drive.

For lovers of nature and flowers, a few kilometres from the centre is the Borová Hora Arboretum of the Technical University in Zvolen, nearly 50 hectares with the largest collection of roses in Slovakia (hundreds of varieties) and a cactus greenhouse. It's open seasonally, roughly from mid-March to the end of October, on weekdays, so it's best to check the hours and admission on abh.tuzvo.sk. And when the children need to let off steam in the water, the thermal swimming complex in Kováčová (5 km) has indoor and outdoor pools open year-round, a whirlpool and a 60-metre indoor water slide; the mineral water here reaches up to 38 °C.

Let's be honest: Zlatý Potok is not the mountains or a ski base. It's two smaller in-town apartments for two — Apartment 73 (33.3 m²) and Apartment 74 (41.5 m²), each with a balcony overlooking the town, a fully equipped kitchen, fast Wi-Fi and free private parking. That's exactly what you'll value as a peaceful base: in the evening you park at the door, put the children to bed, and in the morning you set off again. Thanks to the central location at the R1/R2 crossroads, Banská Bystrica with the SNP Museum is about 20–25 minutes away, and Hronsek with its wooden UNESCO church just 13 km.
