Chopok and Jasná: A Family Guide to the Resort

Jasná below Chopok is Slovakia's largest and most modern mountain resort and, at the same time, a paradise for families with children. In summer it lures with cable cars, cycling trails and lakes; in winter with perfectly groomed slopes and children's parks. Let's look together at how to plan a stay that both little ones and grown-ups will enjoy.

The heart of the resort is Chopok (2,024 m), to which modern cabin cable cars will comfortably carry you from both sides of the mountain – from the north in Jasná and from the south in Krúpová. Children love the views from the glass cabins and parents appreciate reaching the summit without a demanding hike. We recommend setting out in the morning, when visibility is usually best and the queues at the cable cars shorter.

In summer, Jasná is ideal for family trips. An easy loop suitable even for prams leads around Vrbické Lake, while children enjoy rope centres, scooters and educational trails. Cycling lovers will appreciate the bike park with routes for various levels. Don't forget layered clothing – even in summer Chopok tends to be noticeably colder and windier than the valley.

Winter transforms Jasná into one of the best ski resorts in Central Europe. You'll find slopes for absolute beginners as well as demanding skiers, children's ski nurseries with conveyor belts and mascots. For families with small children we recommend the gentler slopes on the northern side, where facilities, refreshments and equipment rentals are all within reach.

Getting there is easy: Jasná lies about 15 minutes by car from Liptovský Mikuláš, which you reach via the D1 motorway. If you travel without a car, use the train connection to Liptovský Mikuláš and then a bus or ski bus directly to the resort. In season, ski buses also run from surrounding villages, which you'll especially appreciate when parking on busy days.

Plan at least two or three days so you can manage the cable car to Chopok, a walk around the lake and some rest. Nearby it's worth visiting the Demänová Ice Cave or the Demänová Cave of Liberty, ideal for a rainy day. The thermal spas in the Liptov region are a pleasant finish to an active day and children will fall in love with them.
