Spring in the Tatras is a magical time – the valleys awaken, snow still lingers on the ridges, and the weather can change from hour to hour. That's exactly why a well-packed backpack is half the success. We'll advise you on what to bring for a spring weekend so you stay warm, dry, and comfortable in any weather.
The foundation is layering your clothing. Mornings are chilly, days warm up, and it gets cold again at altitude. Go for a functional T-shirt, a warm mid-layer (fleece or hoodie), and a waterproof jacket against wind and rain. Don't forget a thin hat and gloves – even in April the wind can howl on the ridges.
Footwear determines the comfort of your whole trip. Waterproof trekking boots with good soles are ideal for spring hikes, as the trails are often muddy and icy at higher elevations. If you plan to climb into snow, consider gaiters and poles for better stability.
Pack a thermos of tea, plenty of water, and energy snacks into your backpack. The spring sun is deceptive – bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip balm, as the reflection off the snow burns your skin faster than you'd expect. A small first-aid kit and a charged power bank are also handy.
Timing is key. Set out early in the morning while the snow is frozen and firm – in the afternoon it softens and walking becomes harder. Always check the avalanche situation and trail conditions in advance, as in May the higher routes may still be closed under the TANAP spring closure.
When it comes to transport, you can comfortably reach the Tatras by car or train. If travelling without a car, use the Tatra Electric Railway, which connects the main resorts. Parking at popular trailheads fills up quickly on weekends, so it pays to arrive early or reserve a spot in advance.
After a day in the fresh air, you'll appreciate comfortable and private accommodation. Villas and apartments from TatraVillas offer space to relax, a fully equipped kitchen, and room to dry your gear – ideal for couples and families alike.
