Autumn transforms the Tatras into a palette of colours you won't see in any other season. Larches turn gold, blueberry carpets flush red and morning mists roll through the valleys like something from a fairy tale. The most beautiful colours usually appear from the second half of September to mid-October, with higher elevations turning yellow before the valleys. Watch the forecast – after the first frosts and on sunny days the contrasts are at their most intense. Set out early in the morning, when mist rises above the mountain lakes and the light is at its softest.
For golden larches head to the Žiarska Valley in the Western Tatras or the area around Popradské Pleso, where the needles turn a deep orange. An easy yet stunning option is the Studená Valley or a walk to Skalnaté Pleso. For a more relaxed day with children, the Roháčska Valley with its waterfalls framed by colourful forest is ideal.
Autumn weather is fickle – pack layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, a hat and gloves, as mornings can be frosty and the ridges windy. Don't forget a headlamp, since darkness falls early, and a flask of hot tea. Hiking boots with a good sole are invaluable on damp, slippery trails covered in leaves.
You can reach the trailheads comfortably by car, but in season it's worth using the Tatra Electric Railway connecting Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica. Car parks near popular valleys fill up fast on weekends, so arrive early or plan your hike for a weekday, when the trails are pleasantly empty.
