A classic among family trails is the walk to Popradské pleso lake. From Poprad you can comfortably take the Tatra Electric Railway to Štrbské Pleso, from where a wide and gently ascending path leads on. The hike takes about 1 hour one way and children usually manage it on foot. At the lake you can enjoy a warm tea in a mountain chalet while admiring the views of the surrounding peaks.
If you're looking for something completely relaxed, take a walk around Štrbské Pleso. The educational loop around the lake is only 2.5 km, flat and comfortable even with a stroller. Along the way you'll find information boards, benches and beautiful photo spots. Ideal for a first introduction to the Tatras with very small children.
Another popular family trail is the path to the Studený potok waterfalls near Tatranská Lomnica. The trail leads through shaded forest alongside murmuring water, and children are fascinated by the cascades and little bridges. Allow approximately 1.5 hours there and back. We recommend sturdier shoes, as some sections can be slippery after rain.
For families with older children, the Symbolic Cemetery near Popradské pleso is an excellent choice. This reverent and educational place adds a dimension of storytelling about the history of mountaineering. The path is a bit steeper but still manageable, and the reward is a quiet atmosphere and the panorama of the Mengusovská valley.
A practical tip to finish: set out on hikes early in the morning when there are fewer people and the weather is more pleasant. Always pack layered clothing, plenty of water, a snack and a raincoat – the weather in the mountains changes quickly. The Tatra Electric Railway and buses conveniently take you to most starting points, so a car is not essential.
