Skiing in the Tatras for Beginners: Where to Go

You've finally decided to step onto skis and the Tatras are the right choice. Both the High and Low Tatras offer gentle slopes, quality ski schools and modern infrastructure that make even a complete novice feel safe. In this article we'll advise you where to go, how to prepare and what to expect from your first day on skis.

For absolute beginners, the ideal place is the Tatranská Lomnica resort, which has spacious practice meadows with conveyor lifts right at the base. Equally popular is Štrbské Pleso with its gentle blue slopes and stunning surroundings around the lake. In the Low Tatras we recommend Jasná – specifically its easier parts at Záhradky, where you'll find wide and well-groomed slopes.

The key to a successful start is a ski school. All the mentioned resorts have professional schools with instructors who speak both Slovak and English. An individual lesson usually lasts two hours and after just the first day you'll be able to descend a gentle slope on your own. We recommend booking an instructor in advance, especially during weekends and holidays.

As for equipment, you don't need to invest in your own skis at the start. Rental shops at the resorts offer complete sets – skis, poles, boots and a helmet, which we highly recommend. Dress in layers, don't forget waterproof gloves, goggles and sunscreen, because the sun on the snow can cause serious sunburn.

The best time to ski for beginners is from January to March, when there is plenty of snow and the slopes are well-groomed. Try to avoid weekends, when the slopes are busiest. If you come during the working week and hit the slope early in the morning, you'll have peace and quiet to practise without pressure from other skiers.

You can easily reach the Tatras by car or by train. The Tatra Electric Railway connects the individual resorts, so you can avoid parking and winter roads. From Štrba, a cog railway runs directly to Štrbské Pleso. If you travel by car, keep in mind that during the season the car parks near the resorts fill up quickly, so set off early.

After a full day on the slopes you'll appreciate comfortable and private accommodation. You'll find villas and apartments from TatraVillas right in the heart of the Tatras, within reach of the slopes. Book your stay directly with us commission-free and treat yourself to a comfortable base for your first Tatra ski trip.
