Tatras Without a Car: By Tram and Bus Across the Mountains

The idea that you can only explore the Tatras by car is a myth. Thanks to the Tatra tram, a dense network of buses and cable cars, you can reach almost anywhere – without the stress of parking, traffic jams and hunting for a spot at crowded mountain resorts. Public transport is also eco-friendly, cheaper and often faster than you'd expect.

The heart of transport in the High Tatras is the Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ), connecting Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica. It runs every 30 to 60 minutes, offers stunning views and stops right in the tourist resorts. From Starý Smokovec you can also take the cog railway up to Hrebienok, the starting point of many popular hikes.

You can reach the Tatras themselves by ZSSK train to Poprad, the region's main transport hub. From Poprad, both the tram and buses run directly to the Tatra settlements. If arriving from Bratislava or Košice, InterCity and express trains bring you to Poprad in a few hours, and from there you continue comfortably onward.

The Low Tatras and resorts like Demänovská Valley, Jasná or Liptovský Mikuláš are served by regional buses. In summer a cyclobus operates, and in winter ski buses take you straight to the cable cars, free or for a symbolic fee.
